COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Are you ready to transform your photography skills and capture stunning black-and-white portraits like a pro? Join us for an unforgettable hands-on multi-session workshop hosted by a talented local Chicago artist, Nyia Sissac! Whether you're an inspiring photographer or just want to level up your portrait game, this workshop has everything you need!

This class requires that you have your own SLR, DSLR CAMERA, SD CARD, and USB DRIVE (OPTIONAL)

  • In sessions 1-3: Learn essential techniques to capture the perfect shot, from lighting different skin tones to posing to composition. Nyia will walk you through the entire process, showing you how to get the best out of your subjects.

  • In session 4: Take your photos to the next level by mastering basic photo editing and retouching skills. You'll explore both subtle adjustments and bold enhancements! Learn how to make a successful, ready-to-print file for the future. Gaining helpful tips on picking photo paper to complement your portraits

  • Intro to Print: taking home prints of your newly made work.

Participants will need to bring:

  • DSLR camera 

  • SD Card, External Hard Drive, or USB

  • Option to bring own backdrop/ fabric (week 4)

Come ready and eager to learn as we talk about how to learn black and white photography from the basics to advanced lighting techniques. How to frame, capture, and edit your images.

Chicago-based artist, Nyia Sissac (she/they) is a fine art portrait photographer. Whose work is rooted in storytelling, memory, and community. She explores themes tied to the African American experiences. Using her lens to narrate the stories of family, past, present, and future. Nyia’s work serves as both an archive and a bridge, connecting generations while preserving the legacy of those who came before us. A Columbia College Alum Nyia now spends her time as a working artist. Working with Artists in Public Schools (formerly known as CPSLives), Nyia has spent her time teaching a younger generation of artists. Teaching them the fundamentals on how to take care of their mental health while also showing them the foundations of photography.

Refund Policy: For all LATITUDE courses, full payment is required to reserve your spot in the class. If you need to cancel your reservation for any reason, LATITUDE can provide a 100% refund for cancellations made 10 days prior to the start date of the course. Cancellations made with less than the 7 day notice will be given a 100% lab credit. Cancellations made within 72 hours of class run will be given a credit for 50% of the purchase price which can be used for any lab purchases, including re-enrollment, in the future. No refund for cancellations made on the start day of the course and will be considered a donation to the space.
