What to expect:

Want to learn about film photography? Want to learn about birds? In partnership with Chicago Bird Alliance, participants will learn how to use analog photography as a tool to slow down, reflect, and learn about birds, their habitat, and birding in Chicago. No experience with birding or photography is necessary.

After an introduction to birding and the fundamentals of photography, covering basic camera use and fully manual exposure settings with a focus on photographing birds and their habitat in the first session, we’ll visit Montrose Point Bird Sanctuary for the second session. Each participant will receive one roll of color film for the trip, which LATITUDE will then develop and make 4x6 prints of. In the third session, we'll look through the prints together and discuss the experience and what the photographs can teach us.

Participants should ideally have a fully functioning 35mm film camera and lens with the ability for fully manual settings (aperture, shutter speed, and ISO). We do not have cameras to loan out, but if you don’t have a camera and would still like to join, or have any questions about if your camera will work, please reach out and let us know before registering. No specialized wildlife gear is required; the workshop is focused on photography as a means of being present and learning. 

The workshop fee includes a donation to Chicago Bird Alliance, one 36 exposure roll of 35mm color film, film processing, small enhanced Minilab scanning, and 4x6 prints of the full roll.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Join us for this introductory course covering the basics of printing on Canon printers with a color-managed workflow. This session is designed to help you feel confident printing independently and certify you on the Canon 2600, 4000 and our Epson 4900, 9000 printers at LATITUDE. 

During our time together, we will cover:
✰ Paper types (matte, glossy, and specialty options) and how to choose between them
✰ How to make an appointment through our online booking system
✰ How to track and calculate your printing costs
✰ Printer settings and file prep basics, including resizing and adding borders
✰ Trimming techniques

✰ Packaging best practices for safely transporting your prints

You will leave with two ~ 8x10 prints

Preparing for Class

✰ Please bring two high-resolution images roughly sized to 8x10 inches at 300 dpi.

✰ Bring your files on a USB drive, external hard drive, or be prepared to AirDrop if you’re using an iPhone.

This session will be approximately an hour and a half of tutoring, you will then have the workstation and printer for an additional hour and a half to continue printing. Any prints beyond the (2) 8×10’s will be charged at our regular DIY fee.

Join us for a hands-on experience a part of Chicago Exhibition Week making your own glass plate ink-jet transfer! Combine the magic of a digital and analog photographic process. Bring a photo to the lab and we will help you make a glass plate of your own.

No prior experience is necessary. Bring a photograph and our team will guide you through the process. This is an invitation to think differently about how images move between screens and surfaces and how photography can bring people together! Come make something and see what’s possible with the resources and community at the Latitude lab.
