_IMG: common bond; end of day piece" is a photographic construction examining the labor of picture-making through the structural logic of the "Common Bond" bricklaying pattern (also known as "American Bond"). A floating trowel belonging to my late father anchors the composition, joined by other tools, studio materials, and a reflective tape drawing-in-space in the upper register of the composition — which creates an optical shifting between foreground and background. The "Common Bond" pattern — whose headers prevent structural collapse — becomes both structure and metaphor. This work is dedicated to the bricklayers of my family, and all the builders in this world who make our world livable and hospitable.

Robert Chase Heishman

Robert Chase Heishman (b. 1984; Des Moines, Iowa) is an artist interested in the relationship of images and reality. Working across photography, film/video, and shaped by a family lineage of bricklayers and farmers, his conceptual practice treats photographs as both object and inquiry. He exhibits and screens nationally and internationally. His work is held in the collections of the Walker Art Center and the Nelson-Atkins Museum. He has collaborated with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company, Radiohead, Sigur Rós, Megan Schvaneveldt, and Michael Rakowitz, among many other artists. He holds an MFA from Northwestern University's Art Theory & Practice program and a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute's Photography & New Media and Art History programs.

Thoughts on the lab

LATITUDE allowed me to explore new material realities for how to physically manifest my work. I often struggle with the latent period between making an image or photograph and when it enters the world as an object. My time at LATITUDE was special because I got to truly experiment with papers, printing, and substrates. The community is unmatched — so generous, knowledgeable, and special. The trickle of fellow artists moving through LATITUDE was such a generative force during the residency. Everyone I met and worked with, I hold dear in my heart and learn from.
