LUCY WOOD BAIRD

Trained in photography, Lucy Wood Baird creates spatial, sculptural collages from shards of images made and collected from the ambient image noise surrounding us. Her work examines the objecthood of the image and how photographic fragments operate as physical forms in space. Relinquishing legibility and context, these shards become structures that deploy the image as duplicate, shadow, negative, and mirror, probing photography’s unstable relationship to truth and the real. Through trompe l’oeil constructions and visual puzzles, Baird reasserts the experiential potential of images while exploring photographic identity as simultaneously record, chameleon, and messenger within a culture saturated by increasingly unreliable images.

thoughts on the lab

My time at Latitude continues to influence my work deeply, learning fabric printing during my residency introduced an entirely new material language to my practice that I still use. My conversations during my studio visits, with Latitude staff and other artists working in the lab continue to influence how I think about my work and the trajectory of my practice.
