Electric Rope, 2010

AIR 2014

Inkjet print on paper
8 × 10 Inches

There is an alchemical transmutation in shooting on film; a kind of earth magic that combing it's properties to freeze time. This photograph was made between the anticipated 2012 apocalypse and the activation of CERN's Large Hadron Collider. The world seemed beyond perception.

This image first appeared in my monograph, Luminous Flux, but has never existed as a standalone print. It was created just before my time as a Latitude AIR, during a period when I spent countless hours wandering the streets with a camera, questioning both the act and purpose of photographing. Why roam? Why photograph at all?

After years of holding this image close, it feels only fair to release it back into the world. It is a photograph born from a particular moment, one that could only be made through the alchemy of film, time, and chance.

This print is available only from September 17th - December 7th, 2026. After this date, this image will not be made available in this format again.

Todd Diederich

IN THIS REALM

IM LIGHT WEDGED INTO EXISTENCE.

IN CONSTANT APOCALYPSE. ODYSSEYS AND PATHS PRE-DETERMINED BY THE OTHERS USE OF DESIGN.

IM LIGHT, WEIGHTLESS FLOATING THROUGH THE COSMOS. SPACESHIP EARTH MY CAMERA OBSCURA. ONCE IN THE CAVE, THERE IS SEARCHING FOR OUR SOURCE PROJECTION, NOT THE SENSATION OF COLOR NOR THE PERCEPTION OF BUT

THE ACTUAL SHAPE.

HOW FAR IS THE NEAREST GALAXY?

HOW FAR IS THE NEAREST SHADOW WHOM ABSORBS ALL?

THE VISIBLE SPECTRUM IS REJECTED BY THE WHITE LIGHT.

LET LIGHT BE AND LIGHT IS.

THE ENGINEERS AROUND ME GIVE THEMSELVES SHAPES AND NAMES IN REFLECTION OF THE LUMINARY SOURCE.

I'M SIMPLY RECORDING THE HOLOGRAM, THE SHINY THINGS IT HANDS US.

GIVE IT A NAME AND ITS DONE.

THROUGH A FEEDBACK LOOP

I PRESENT AN IMAGE OF "ENTERING THE KINGDOM".

A METHODOLOGY OF INSIGHT

THAT GOES BEYOND DUALITY.

ALL IS SENT BY THE SUN TO REMOVE MYSELF FROM THE FORGETFULNESS OF AUTHORITY.

Thoughts on the lab

Latitude helped make me feel more connected to Chicago as a working photographer. It made me a believer of what I was practicing. It helped me realize the potential and power of what I was doing combined with the communal effort.
