Yashoda Laktar
I explore the intersections of migration and identity through self-portraiture, family photographs, performative videos, and mixed-media installations. My work emerges from living in an in-between space, where I feel a sense of belonging to neither here nor there, yet remain connected to both.
Having moved from India to the United States, I experience home as fluid and constantly shifting. My identity is shaped by this tension, pulled between memory and present reality. As an immigrant, I navigate displacement while questioning ideas of home, rootedness, and tradition.
Thoughts on the lab
Latitude gave me a month in Chicago — June 2024 — that turned out to be unexpectedly pivotal, both personally and creatively. The studio space and freedom to experiment without pressure pushed my practice forward, and the staff support made it easy to take risks with new work. It was also a really special time exploring the city with my husband, just the two of us — right before we found out we were expecting and everything in our lives began to shift!
