WORDS FROM NICOLE MAUSER

Painting is thinking physically. Through painting, collage, video and installation, I construct layers and illusion to generate questions of what is ‘actual’. I use a process-oriented approach rooted in the ambiguity of images coming into being rather than having already arrived. I follow the internal logic of images as they develop to interrogate how they will play out. Within curatorial collaborations, I incorporate the labor and efforts of exhibition-making into the exhibition itself. These performative gestures reveal invisible labor and mechanics to frame ‘process-as-image’. As a painter and a curator I use the gallery and the studio as stages to reveal and suspend perception.

Thoughts on the lab

Using Latitude’s large format scanners and printers allowed me to explore iterations of the “infinite copy” and push the illusion and scalability of physical brush strokes and gestures.
I generated a sort of 'warp and weft' process by scanning my paintings and brush strokes then printing and collaging these images together then scanning and printing the collages over and over- thus weaving analog and digital processes to confuse the eye of what is real what is not.
