For my project This Is Captured Paper (For the Birds Trapped in Airports, 2026) I have been creating photocollages based upon U.S. colonial photography made in the Philippines. By physically cutting, pasting, and rearranging various elements of archival images, I aim to deconstruct and critique the colonial gaze. By weaving historical photographs into my own contemporary art practice, I recontextualize archives that codified colonial power dynamics between the United States and the Philippines.
Thoughts on the lab
My time at Latitude made an enormous impact on my practice. Having access to the expertise of the staff and amazing workspace was invaluable. The residency enabled me to produce drum scans for my first book New Deal Utopias (Kehrer Verlag, 2017) and to print for a solo show at Water Tower. It was inspiring be part of the Latitude community and I continue to be grateful for that gift of time and space to work.
